Fragrance of positivity

"Having a positive approach to life means, no matter what situations we are faced with, we will always be successful," writes BK Swathi Prasad.

Is there more to the word “fitness” than just keeping the body fit? Today, more than ever, increased awareness is building up regarding mind-body wellness. The three key factors for good physical health are good food, exercise and rest. This is external.

But mind-body medicine tells us that our mind i.e. our thoughts have a direct impact on our body and affect our emotional and physical wellbeing. In other words, most of our illness is psychosomatic. The key to inner wellness is a happy mind.

Positive thoughts are the food, a little contemplation is the exercise and meditation is the rest for our mind. In this series on “inner wellness,” we will explore some qualities and values that will enable us to empower our mind.

Let us start with positivity.

Having a positive approach to life means, no matter what situations we are faced with, we will always be successful. Here, success is defined by our attitude, not by the outcome of the situation. We do not allow the situation to overwhelm us or bog us down.

Instead, we stay firmly rooted in the belief that whatever has come my way is here for a reason (to make me stronger, to open up more doorways for something better etc.). When we act from this place of inner acceptance, there will be a shift in our energy field resulting in a flow of positive energy.

A still mind will help us see the deeper meaning in each situation. On the surface the situation may seem worse, however, our positive attitude will ultimately help us see the benevolence in that situation. At times, it is not easy and even impossible to think positive in difficult situations.

If we are unable to practise positivity regardless our best efforts, meditation will give us the push we need.

During such times, our response is based on the thinking pattern we have developed over a period of time. If we form the pattern of thinking positive, we respond positively without any effort. The practice of thinking positive finishes the negative. So conduct a little contemplative workshop with yourself.

With constant attention, consciously practise choosing a positive response to situations. We are the masters of our mind so we can choose to create the thoughts we want. When we stay firmly grounded in positive thinking, we will stay away from criticising others and focus only on positive thus helping them bring out their best.

The fragrance of our positive energy will then spread out into our surroundings and help diffuse the situation.

Another important aspect of positivity is when we’re cooking. While we’re chopping vegetables, stirring, rolling, baking or frying, our mind is active, we are thinking. This thought energy affects the food and those who consume the food. So, cook with care and watch what you’re thinking.

If we are unable to practise positivity regardless our best efforts, meditation will give us the push we need. In meditation, we connect with the Supreme Being and experience a tranquil state that overcomes negativity and infuses us with a positive power.

Be meditative, be positive.
