running after happiness

Road to happiness

“Peace of mind is the secret to happiness and the practical aspect of the problem is how to attain peace of mind?” says Dada JP Vaswani

The whole world is unhappy. What is the reason? We are all walking different pathways of life. We are all in quest of happiness and yet we are all unhappy. The reason is that we are seeking happiness on the wrong track. What is the right road to happiness?

We have an answer to this question, given to us in that great book which I regard as the bible of humanity. We revere it as the Bhagavad Gita. In one place Sri Krishna, while speaking to his dear devoted disciple, Arjuna, says: “Arjuna you say you want to be happy. Let me give you the prescription for happiness.” And the words that the Lord uses are “Ashantasya kutaha sukham”. The literal meaning of these words is, without peace of mind how can you be happy?

Peace of mind is the secret to happiness and the practical aspect of the problem is how to attain peace of mind?

The answer is: Forget thyself. Do you wish to get happiness? To get happiness, you must forget yourself. In our pursuit of happiness, we are all selfish and greedy. Therefore, happiness eludes us as a shy bird. The more we run after it the more it runs away from us. Forget yourselves my friends, forget yourself and you will get true happiness. And one way of forgetting yourself is to go out and serve others.

Let us try to do at least one simple act of service every day. One simple act of service. If you cannot do anything else, at least smile. Your smile can work wonders.

As you forget yourselves in trying to bring happiness into the lives of others, you find, one day, that the happiness which went out of you has returned to you manyfold. Remember, my friends, happiness moves in a circle. The happiness that goes out of you is sure, sure as the sun rises in the east, it is sure to return to you and will be to you as music at midnight. Forget yourself, bring joy into the lives of the joyless ones.

Let us try to do at least one simple act of service every day. One simple act of service. If you cannot do anything else, at least smile. Your smile can work wonders. Bring joy into the lives of the joyless ones, give food to the hungry, give water to the thirsty, give clothes to the naked. And remember birds and animals too are our younger brothers and sisters in the family of creation. To feed them is also to give joy to the universe, the joy which is sure to return to you. Try to reduce your wants. Live on simple wants. Do not be guided by the opinions of others. Do not be tied to material things. Do not depend on material things.

The secret of happiness is not the number of things you possess, but the number of things that you can do without.
