Setting the mind free: Beyond ordinary thinking

Setting the mind free: Beyond ordinary thinking

If we can open our mind to receiving what is beyond the three dimensional world - beyond ordinary way of thinking - then we can tap the infinite potential waiting for us inside our own mind, says Sri M.

You can’t see him anywhere. Where is he? Look around and there he is. Ah! Standing many feet away from the place, still trembling, of course. His bundle has been thrown out of his hand; he is surprised that he is still alive. There, he is under a jewellery store’s roof, having cleared all long jump records.

Neither I, who is the bystander, nor he who jumped this far, really believed that he had done it.

Now, how is this possible? How did this man, who we thought was going to fall down and die, jump so far? Let us examine this closely. Why? Well, the fact is that he, for a split second, was out of the hypnotic trance derived from his own beliefs–that he is sick, he is an old man and he is about to die and that he cannot walk more than one foot at a time, and so on.

For the split second, in an emergency, the mind and the body survival mechanism wanting to help this man live, acted all of a sudden overruling all the ideas of limitations that he had in his mind always. To put it in a nutshell, he was not thinking, he was acting.

It was an involuntary action, unaccompanied by the voluntary thinking. For some time, there was a gap in his thought process and then, the mind directly took over and he jumped, because it was a question of life and death.

Of course, there is a medical explanation, a biological explanation: In that emergency state, the adrenalin pumped into his blood and thus he got super human strength and he cleared all long jump records. Yeah, adrenalin must be the physical reason but where is the switch to release it?  To let it flow into the blood.

The whole science of meditation is a way to go beyond or to go deeper than the surface of the mind; to explore the deeper recesses and come up with greater abilities and understanding so much so that the mind realises, compared to what it was accustomed to, it has almost reached an infinite height.

Who did it? How did it happen? Of course, the old man was not responsible for it. If he had thought, he could not have done it. If thought, thinking, calculation and everything came into it, he couldn’t have done it. It was a direct action without thinking.

Let us not think. I am not trying to say, that we should not think or we should not be rational. All that is all right, all that is necessary but the lesson to be drawn from it is that there are dimensions of the mind that operate beyond our ordinary, logical, and rational thinking.

This follows naturally that if there is some way we can extricate ourselves from our day-to-day thinking, which is of course necessary for our day-to-day living, if we can voluntarily extricate ourselves from the conditioning thoughts in our mind, and then open our mind to receiving what is beyond the three dimensional world–beyond ordinary way of thinking–then we can tap the infinite potential waiting for us inside our own mind–waiting for us, waiting to be explored.

And, there are ways and means of doing this.

The whole science of meditation is a way to go beyond or to go deeper than the surface of the mind; to explore the deeper recesses and come up with greater abilities and understanding so much so that the mind realises, compared to what it was accustomed to, it has almost reached an infinite height.

This happens.
