What is the purpose of life? – Dada J. P. Vaswani

Hasten to your purpose

The noblest and the highest in the ladder of evolution is the human being. Have we ever asked ourselves why we have received such a precious gift? What are we doing to fulfil that purpose?

Innumerable are the types of jivas inhabiting the earth. Some of them are visible. Perhaps many are invisible. Among them all, the noblest and the highest in the ladder of evolution is the human being. Have we ever asked ourselves why we have received such a precious gift? We have received it for a specific purpose. What are we doing to fulfil that purpose? We have engaged ourselves in attending to many things but alas, we have forgotten the one essential work for which we are here.

Have you ever asked yourself as you snuggle into bed and drift into sleep: What have I done with my day today? Have I moved closer to God? Have I brought happiness to anyone? Have I spoken kind words?

I know several businessmen who will not leave their offices before the day’s accounts are tallied and closed to their satisfaction. They insist that pending bills and unsettled transactions should not be carried forward to the next day. But how many of us tally our daily accounts in the book of life?

If truth were to be told, we live a life of inertia! We leave our accounts unsettled, untallied.

There is more to life than growing older in years or richer in terms of material wealth. Such ‘eminence’ is of no use to anyone. In the words of Kabir: “Futile is the lofty eminence of the date tree, which offers no shade for travellers, while its fruit is hard to reach.” Kabir also tells us, gazing at the grinding machine, “Caught between the two grinding stones, nothing remains intact.”

Time is fleeting! If we are to make the most of this life, the time to begin is now.

“Awake! Arise!” was Swami Vivekananda’s call to the youth of this nation. Indeed, all of us need to be aware, to be awakened. We cannot afford to procrastinate, for we may miss the golden opportunity that this human life offers to us – of getting closer to God, of experiencing his beautiful presence.
