When an individual becomes an industry

“Instead of fighting for a larger share of the market pie, try to expand the pie itself.” - Radhakrishnan Pillai

All existing businesses, even the old shops round the corner, have been built by people who put in a lot of effort to create a customer base.

But now, with the entire world becoming one huge market, customers have a free choice. And they are exercising their rights too.

Customers are not the only ones that are changing.

You will be quite surprised to learn that this ‘open-market policy’—which most countries are adopting—is forcing even competitors to come together.

Their aim is to make the entire market process smoother so that it does not end in conflicts later.

Even Chanakya recorded something similar some 2,300 years ago when policies were made by various business owners for the selling of their goods in a specific market.

He said, “Thus, (the sale of good’s) in one’s own territory has been explained.” (2.16.17). So, even ancient India was acquainted with the spirit of co-operation.

But can this sutra (verse) teach us to co-operate with our competitors in this modern, globalised world?

Create a quality product

The first requirement for a company to be in a position to negotiate is to be successful itself. For that, a businessman needs to have a good product or service, as per the customers’ wishes. So try to understand this need. Spend some time in research.

You will need a lot of hard work in this phase. You should be like a great leader with an undying spirit. This will be a good investment and will pay off in the long run if the process is right.

Bring competitors together

After a point, we all realise that no market can have only one producer or supplier. Even if there’s a monopoly, it will not last. Other players will enter sooner or later. But that doesn’t mean you are under threat.

In fact, a competitor’s entry is good news as it shows that demand is increasing. And if more players enter the arena, the next best thing to do is to bring all of them together and form an association. Basically, you should transform yourself from an ‘individual’ to an entire ‘industry’.

Expand the pie

Instead of fighting for a larger share of the market pie, try to expand the pie itself. There is enough space for everyone, especially if all players improve their services all the time.

Thus, the final phase involves all the players converting their individual businesses into a successful industry, not only serving their customers but also creating employment, building the society and helping in overall development.
