Infinite potential of the mind: Paying close attention

By

Someone he doesn’t know secretly wanted to help this man. So when his hands are free, he bends down and frees the chain from his feet and then he begins to wonder how to go up there.

This is so because he doesn’t even know if he can go up since he’s been accustomed to walking only straightforward, not down, not up. So, he keeps going with the hope that someday the trapdoor or the light ray might come again. Great Hope!!

One day, it happens!! The trap door opens again for the food to be sent in. The man manages to whisper loudly enough saying, “Look, can you help me out? I have been trying to go up for long”.

As luck would have it, he sees a strong arm descending from the hole. He holds it and scrambles up and is soon outside the door, outside the tunnel.

There’s a big commotion downstairs. Everybody says, “What’s happened to this man, Bob? Bob!–let’s call him (that).

“He’s disappeared suddenly. We saw him ascending and he’s no more with us. And, we heard the sounds. And, he broke that which kept us together. He’s a rebel for he has broken the chain that kept us together. He is outside the chain now.”

But, that’s all they know. Beyond that, they don’t know that he was seen to go up and he has disappeared and he is no longer coming. He no longer is visible.

Now, while he is going up, he is warned to keep his eyes closed and to open the eyes gradually. Otherwise, in the full blast of the light, he might go blind.

For some time, there is silence. Then, they discuss among themselves, the poor souls in the tunnel, they say, “This cannot be. There cannot be anything other than this darkness, which is so beautiful.

Gradually, over the days he opens his eyes a little, then a little more, and gets accustomed to the light, then sees the world. He sees that there is a free world outside and there is so much potential for doing so many things outside. And, therefore, one day, he feels very bad for his brethren who are chained and going around in circles one behind the other in the dark tunnel.

So, when no one is watching, he decides to talk to them about it. He calls from the trapdoor one day and says, “Hey there.” First they say, “There is a voice speaking from heaven or can it be?”

He says, “I am one of you, who was here. I’ve escaped now. There’s a wide beautiful world out here and there is light, light which you cannot imagine. There is so much food and life is enjoyable. There’s a beautiful breeze blowing and how wonderful this world is. I can help you come out.”

For some time, there is silence. Then, they discuss among themselves, the poor souls in the tunnel, they say, “This cannot be. There cannot be anything other than this darkness, which is so beautiful. What breeze is he talking about? Whose voice is this? He says he is one of us, but he cannot be one of us. Either he is a lunatic or he is something evil trying to destroy our normal life in which we are kind of adjusted to. And, what does he mean by light? The only light is the faint light that comes when food is passed down to us. There cannot be blinding light. He must be imagining or he is trying to make a fool of us.”
