claiming justice

Justice not claimed is justice denied

Dadi Janki observes, "The Government will act only when we stand by our conscience and are determined not to allow the unlawful at any cost and irrespective of the status of the criminal."

We have a love of condemning the government of the day for not controlling the incidence of crime, not punishing the guilty or not checking the rising graph of crime. But have we ever realised that when the law-abiding citizens stop resisting or fighting for their rights or silently accept the unlawful suppression and exploitation of other people, the state injustice reaches its climax?

Unsocial and criminal elements have their sway when people neither check them nor object to their criminal, unethical and immoral deeds. They find it easier as gradually the statecraft also finds it convenient (rather profitable?) to unofficially side with them. They start getting their share in the booty in the form of gifts, offers and bribe etc.

Mere candle marches and protest rallies are of no consequence. They are only temporary, subjective and emotional news for the journalists.

Criminals gain courage and can go to the extent of asking the officers of the law-machinery to remain away from the site of crime or look the other way during the time of crime. Of course there is compensation for cooperation.

Who is at fault? Of course the criminal. Perhaps the justice delivery system also. But what about the victim and other onlookers? Today, how many of us listen to the voice of our conscience or stand for others’ rights or resist the acts of crime? How many consider the victim, be it of theft, violence or accident, our own brother and sister and come forward to help?

Let us not just blame the government. Government will act only when we stand by our conscience and are determined not to allow the unlawful at any cost and irrespective of the status of the criminal. Mere candle marches and protest rallies are of no consequence. They are only temporary, subjective and emotional news for the journalists. Let us learn to deserve justice before we demand and expect it.
