imperishable light

Know Thyself: Lord has the imperishable light

"Don't use the word Bhagavan for all and sundry. The Bhagavatam describes Bhagavan as one who has complete lordship, righteousness, fame, prosperity, wisdom and renunciation." - Sri M

In the Shvetashvatara Upanishad—the Upanishad of the White Horse—the following occurs in the description of the Supreme Cosmic person:

Sarvanana sirogrivah sarvabhutaguhasayah |

Sarvavyapi sa bhagavamstasmat sarvagatah sivah ||

This is how it describes the Supreme Person who is referred to, in the Prasnopanishad by Pippalada, as the One with sixteen parts.

Sarvavyapi sa bhagavamstasmat sarvagatah sivah ||

Meaning: He who is in the faces, the heads and necks of all, and also dwells in the cave of all beings.

Many commentators have modified ‘Sarvabhutaguhasayah’ by saying: ‘In the cave of the heart of all beings’ meaning who dwells in secret, hidden in all beings.

Sarvavyapi sa bhagavan

Okay? He who is all-pervading; even though he dwells in the heart of all beings, he is all-pervading,

He is the Lord; he is also none other than,

Tasmat sarvagatah sivah

The omnipresent Sivah; the Supreme Being. He indeed is the great Lord, the impeller of the highest Being. He has the power of reaching the purest attainment. He is the ruler, the imperishable light.

The Bhagavatam describes Bhagavan as one who has complete lordship, righteousness, fame, prosperity, wisdom and renunciation.

This is what the Bhagvatam says: Aishwaryasya, Samagrasya, Darmasya, Yashasshriyah, Jnanavairagya Yoshcaiva Shannam Bhaga Itirana.

Meaning: He who has the six qualities of lordship, righteousness, fame, prosperity, wisdom and renunciation is Bhagavan.

So, don’t use the word Bhagavan for all and sundry. The Bhagavatam describes Bhagavan as one who has complete lordship, righteousness, fame, prosperity, wisdom and renunciation.

When the Shvetashvatara Upanishad says Bhagavan, that’s what it means. Sarvavyapi sa bhagavan.

Well, that person indeed is the Lord, the impeller of the highest being, reaching the purest attainment, the ruler, the imperishable light.

Once this has been said, it follows with another description, which connects it to oneself, to the heart of the human being, and not leaves it to some abstract, indefinable, unreachable substance! What is that?
