Kundalini: Towards spiritual fulfillment

"Soon a sense of wellbeing, independent of anything external, begins to be felt by the practitioner. When that happens, the yogi is on his way to the higher regions and greater dimensions," writes Sri M.

These extraordinary and extrasensory powers that are called the Ashtasiddhis–the warning is that one should not give too much attention to these powers because you know powers corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So stay clear and move towards spiritual fulfillment or the realisation of one’s true self that is a spark and a part of the Supreme Reality. This indeed is the aim of yoga–Kundalini yoga or any other yoga for that matter.

Since the Kundalini also generates heat in the physical body, the practitioner should keep to simple food–not too hot and also not too cold foods taken directly from the refrigerator. At least in the beginning of the practice of Kundalini, it is a good idea to go vegetarian and to not smoke because nicotine has the capacity to block the passage of the Sushumna and block the movement of the energies in the chakras. One who practises Kundalini yoga and experiences even the beginnings of the bliss waves in the Sushumna will not need to smoke. The dopamine that is released by nicotine can also be released just by meditating on the spinal cord without the aid of a chemical agent. Soon a sense of wellbeing, independent of anything external, begins to be felt by the practitioner. When that happens, the yogi is on his way to the higher regions and greater dimensions.

When I say greater dimensions, I mean greater dimensions not only of his consciousness but also the greater dimensions, which mean ideas and experiences that are beyond the three-dimensional world, which we know of through our senses.

Tantra describes many ways by which ordinary mundane, physical and sensual activity can be converted or sublimated to the spiritual level of being able to awaken the Kundalini and take it to the highest chakra, the Sahasrara chakra.

I will conclude by saying that whenever there is an extraordinary streak of genius–a great artist who is very creative or a great writer who is very creative or any creative spurt that takes place in any living being or when one is absorbed completely, for instance, looking at the sea or looking at the full moon–it is a spontaneous activation of the Kundalini, even if it is only the lowest chakra, which is known as the Mooladhara. And when one enjoys sex, for instance, wherein on some particular day it is completely different from any other day, when it is something you cannot describe and is so beautiful, that again is the activation of the Kundalini, except that it is in the downward direction.

However for the consciousness to rise to spiritual dimensions, the flow has to be reversed, the sublimation has to take place and the energy has to go upwards. Tantra describes many ways by which ordinary mundane, physical and sensual activity can be converted or sublimated to the spiritual level of being able to awaken the Kundalini and take it to the highest chakra, the Sahasrara chakra. A word of warning–all this should be practiced only under the guidance of a fully awakened spiritual teacher who has been through the path, explored it and made it his personal experience, and not through reading books. This in short, is the great secret passed down to us by the ancient teachers, the great yogis, who practiced and perfected the art and the science of the awakening of the Kundalini.

When the human becomes divine, when man becomes superman, when the ordinary is transformed by the magic touch of the Supreme energy into the extraordinary, when the Atman merges with the Supreme Paramatman, then finite happiness is replaced by infinite bliss known as ‘Anantham Anandam’, the unending happiness of the soul soaked in the bliss of the supreme meeting between Siva and Shakti that is celebrated in the Soundarya Lahiri of Adi Shankaracharya.
