A unifying religion

Absolute religion—is it possible on this plane of evolution? Such a religion must rise above the barriers of geographical frontiers and racial concepts. Can the Christian churches ever have a hold upon Hindu India? Can Islam ever convert Christian Europe?

It seems to me no one of the existing religions may reasonably hope to be accepted by all peoples. Men have different temperaments, different levels of growth and call for different dharmas. The idea of a synthetic or unifying religion appeals to one better than that of “Absolute” religion! Go to a garden and listen to the birds! They sing different songs which blend into one beautiful song. The different songs of different religions may also be blended not, I submit, in a new creed, but in some mighty, unifying personalities summing up in themselves the essential teachings of different religions.

Not words, not concepts, but their embodiment in creative personalities is what will make, more or less, a universal appeal. Among such creative personalities are, I humbly submit, Krishna, the Buddha, Jesus, Francis, Nanak. All of them have this one thing in common, simplicity. It is the simple that appeals to all. The poor are often artistic and the simple is, often, the most attractive.

A unifying religion must study sympathetically the different sadhanas and rituals of different religions. Sympathetically and therefore, symbolically. Veda, Buddhist images, Christian sacraments, Muslim fasts, Parsi fire-worship, Greek mysteries, may all be interpreted symbolically.
