Finding serenity: The healing power of Athirappilly Falls

Aptly called the Niagara of South India, Athirappilly Falls was on my bucket list for a long time. As I trekked towards the fall, it became more of a journey inwards - healing, rejuvenating and infusing a new spirit in me.

Such is my love for the lush and exuberant Indian state of Kerela, that I had resolved to visit it once every year. I had managed to achieve it for a number of years too. But the pandemic broke my streak as it created unprecedented havoc on one and all globally. So this monsoon, I decided to begin again.

Yearning to feast on the unparalleled lushness and serene divinity of Kerala, I spent days choosing from a list of many places within the state. Having already explored the popular destinations and beaches, I wanted to experience the hidden gems. On my bucket list was Athirappilly waterfalls, the largest waterfall in Kerala in Thrissur, over the Chalakudy river. This magnificent water body presents itself in full glory during the monsoon, when the water gushes with full force presenting a spectacular site. It is difficult to take one’s eyes off its unfolding magic.

Indeed, the waterfalls of India are some of the best treasures of nature and Athirappilly is a gigantic waterfall cascading amidst rocky terrains comprising rich biodiversity. It can be counted as a blessing to experience oneness with nature of this magnitude during the monsoon.

Since I was traveling solo after a long time, I decided to do a thorough research and booked a property which promised spectacular views of the waterfall. Upon reaching Thrissur, I took a brief halt and bought some authentic and delicious banana and jackfruit munchies. The remaining part of the journey had picturesque but narrow, bending roads canopied by dense trees and these yummy chips became my constant companion. It felt as if Kerala’s nicest flavours had decided to overpower my senses.

It was almost dusk when I reached my destination. I was sure I’d get a view of the waterfalls the next morning but a constant gushing sound drew me to walk into the hotel room’s balcony. I was left completely awestruck – the stunning, streaming, frothy, majestic Athirappilly waterfalls were right in front of my eyes, serenading me. Although very tired after a long journey, I decided to order a coffee and settle in front of the window, sipping on my brew and absorbing the peace emanating from the gurgling falls.

Trek to the majestic Athirappilly waterfalls

As the sunrays filtered through the drapes in my room, I got up to get a morning view of the waterfalls and voila, what a view it was! I couldn’t wait to start my trek to the Athirappilly falls.

The entire trek was a journey of rediscovering myself. The sense of self often gets lost somewhere in the stress and chaos of one’s urban lifestyle and it is important to restore it through trips like these. Since it was monsoon, I could feel the freshness and aroma of the soil, the washed foliage and joy of the chirping birds. As I kept walking, instead of getting tired, I felt rejuvenated. I hadn’t reached the waterfalls yet, although I was soaking in the beauty and sheer serenity of the surroundings.

What awaited after the exciting trek is difficult to describe in words. The 80 ft high waterfalls in front of me conveyed the power and beauty of nature. I felt all my negativity drown and the strong water body uplift  me. I perched myself on one of the rocks after capturing the falls in my camera.

As travellers are prohibited from wading into the natural pools at the base, I decided to capture the sight in my heart and soul instead.  Indeed, just being there for a few hours rejuvenated my tired soul. I wanted to sit for hours and serenade the tranquillity of this pristine sight and I did just that!

It was a fortunate coincidence that I could bask in the glory of the Athirapilly falls from the comfort of my hotel room window as well. Savouring a hearty Kerala cuisine for dinner that night, the lingering sound of the waterfalls was a pleasant reminder of the mesmerizing experience I had had during the day. Having been up, close and personal with the Athirappilly falls, I could now understand why it is called the ‘Niagara of South India’.

The experience infused in me a new energy as I carried back a bucketful of zeal and fresh spirit to take on life once again. It seemed Athirappilly waterfalls had healed me inside out.
