How may we grow closer to God?

Bhakti is deep love and adoration for the Creator of this Universe. This kind of love does not come suddenly.

If you wish to go closer to God, then follow the path of Love.

God is Absolute Love — and if we love God, we must be imbued with the longing to serve our fellow men. I believe that true service is a spiritual activity, which at its best, is born out of the Love of God. Grow in Love. Love all life; for all life is sacred. Love animals, birds, trees, flowers, the sick and the distressed, the lonely and broken ones. This is true devotion, real bhakti; bhakti begins out of such Love.

In the Hindu way of life, the concept of bhakti denotes absolute devotion to the Lord; in its highest form, it is a truly sublime feeling, arising out of a pure heart and totally free from the contamination of desire for worldly goods or attainments; the true bhakta or devotee seeks God and God alone, for his only goal is Liberation from worldly life and Union with His beloved Lord.

Bhakti is deep love and adoration for the Creator of this Universe. This kind of love does not come suddenly. It is cultivated through Naam Simran, through service to others and by being kind to one and all. But let us remember, ultimately, the form and the words and the actions are secondary: what is most important is a pure and humble heart, free from ego and pride, filled with love for the Lord! Serving the Lotus Feet of the Lord, or pada sevanam: it is an intense and devout form of bhakti, where the Lotus Feet of the Lord becomes the focus of the devotee’s love and prayer.

Bhakti is gifted to us through the grace of the God and the Guru. But we can cultivate bhakti by engaging ourselves in any or all of these beautiful and meaningful devotional activities which will take us closer to God.
