7 Lessons to Stay on the Path to Enlightenment – Sadhu Vaswani

The right path

At the break of dawn, birds warble, spreading their wings they take to the skies, every creature sings the praises of the Lord. So, O human being, do not be ignorant.

I had the opportunity to visit the holy town of Rohiri. There by good fortune I ran into a Darvesh. He was very fair and well built like a Pathan. But unlike Pathans his face glowed with an unusual radiance. I had a dialogue with him. Some of his words penetrated my heart. A great soul, he gifted me the following teachings. He said: “Have faith in God.”

To this I argued: “Man errs. What indicates that he has erred? How are we to know that we have turned away from the right path?”

His reply was simple: “If a man forsakes the path of spirituality, the hollowness of his life troubles him. His conscience pricks him. Such pricks of consciousness are signs of being distracted away from the path of God.”

The second teaching pertains to our daily life. He said, “Forgive the sins and omissions of those who serve you.”

How many times? I asked.

The Darvesh looks at me and says, “Not once, not twice, but 70 times you must forgive. If your servant has erred, you forgive him every day.”

The third teaching: “Be truthful. Do not eschew the truth. Remember the all omnipresent God is listening to it. If there are three persons talking, be sure, there is the fourth one present there, and he is Allah. So be careful of what you think and what you speak. Don’t be a victim of illusions. Hold to truth as the sinking boat holds to the buoyant.”

The fourth teaching: “Remember the omnipotent, the omnipresent Lord! This entire universe is an expression of God’s love. It is a paean to his grace. Every creature sings his name. At the break of dawn, birds warble, spreading their wings they take to the skies, every creature sings the praises of the Lord. So, O human being, do not be ignorant. Acknowledge your existence by praising God.”

The fifth teaching: “Be aware of the end. Know well the time is running out on all of us. Do not delay. For when the journey ends God should not say “It is too late. I was ill you did not serve me. I was hungry, you did not feed me.”

I humbly asked the Darvesh, “Sir, how can God fall ill? God is free of all negativity.”

The Darvesh replies, “My dear one, perhaps you do not know that he resides in all, he lives in all. If anyone falls ill and you do not serve him, it is like not serving God.”

The sixth teaching: “One more thing is necessary if you are on the spiritual path. That is charity. Give alms in charity without the thought of receiving praise or acknowledgement. Give all in charity. Do so secretly. Quietly go and serve the poor with love in your heart.”

The seventh teaching: “Give them your love. Love has a magic quality. It can turn copper into gold. Love heals. Even the kings and emperors who have compassion in their heart serve the poor with immense love. Without love everything is dust. Love is the only truth. Love is the only reality. Everything else is meaningless. Let love illuminate your heart.
