Bhagvat Gita Lessons on Self-Control to achieve calmness – Sadhu T.L. Vaswani

Lord says be a ‘Dheera’

Dheera is a man of self-control. He is not disturbed by pleasure or pain. Such a man eats, but not for the sake of eating. Calmness is a mark of the dheera.

In the second chapter of the Gita, Lord Krishna states that he who is balanced in pain and pleasure, steadfast (dheera), he is fitted for immortality (amrita). The emphasis is on the word, dheera. Sri Krishna says: “Be a dheera” “Dheera” is “steadfast.” Dheera is a man of self-control. He is not disturbed by pleasure or pain. Such a man eats, but not for the sake of eating. Calmness is a mark of the dheera. Shanti, equilibrium, balance in pleasure and pain, are a mark of the dheera. Suffering is a test of man. We so often fail in the hour of difficulty; we lose balance. Men have actually become mad when suffering from loss of money. I have heard men and women abusing God in times of pain.

Pleasure and pain control us. But the master says: “He is a true man who is not overwhelmed by pleasure or pain. The average man easily becomes distressed when objects of pleasure are taken away from him. And, again, he becomes distressed when suffering comes to him. There is a difference between aveera and a dheera. Veera is a man of valour; dheera is a man of self-control. Not all the veeras (valorous men) are pure: but a dheera is a man of purity. The dheera is one who is balanced in pleasure and pain.

Let us ask ourselves the question: Do we feel at peace with the world in the midst of pleasure and pain?
