comfort for happiness

Comfort or happiness?

"When we are at the receiving end we may be very humble and cordial but being in a commanding position we become highly self-centered and insensitive to the needs and expectations of others." - Dadi Janki

Everyone has the ego of being ‘self-sufficient and self-reliant,’ but the irony is that with every passing day, he becomes more dependent on others. In this process of maintaining his prosperity and luxurious living, he exploits and rather destroys others, metaphorically if not literally. He maintains his so-called ‘greatness’ by employing 10-20 hands to work even for his daily needs. His riches and higher status is judged by the number and types of servants and workers he employs for his convenience. But is he considerate and humane to their basic needs and expectations?

Here is an instance, which is not imaginary and it takes place in one form or the other in most of the households and offices. An officer, on reaching his office, found a telegram on his table which read “Mother dead, come at once.” Grief-stricken, he immediately started making arrangements of leaving at the earliest. He rang up the railways to find the time of the next available train. While he was so occupied, a worker entered and said, “Sir, my mother has died. Please grant me leave to go. I had earlier left the telegram on your table.”

The officer then looked at the telegram carefully and read the address. He was relieved to find that it was not meant for him.

When we are at the receiving end we may be very humble and cordial but being in a commanding position we become highly self-centered and insensitive to the needs and expectations of others.

He now became conscious of the worker waiting for his reply. His consciousness and status of being the master became dominant and he said to the worker, “Old people are always dying. Today it is your mother, tomorrow it will be someone else. How can you abandon your work like that?”

Let us not be shocked at this attitude of the officer because we too have adopted such an attitude in some situations at different times. We often become insensitive and blind to others’ needs particularly of those who depend on us for their livelihood (and existence?) When we are at the receiving end we may be very humble and cordial but being in a commanding position we become highly self-centered and insensitive to the needs and expectations of others.

In such a social scenario, can we expect the development of a comfortable, peaceful and happy society?
