Return to thyself

It was a strange dream he dreamt! He could understand the language of the birds! He heard them survey the situation of humanity and say: “What is man’s melody?”

I greeted him with a glad heart. He was not yet forty. But he looked sad. He had striven hard to serve others. Misunderstandings and intrigues had marred his plans, he said. He looked dejected. His strength to work seemed to be ebbing out. I met him next, some months later. He looked young again. There was a beautiful glow in his eyes,—the glow of a great faith. Tasked him what was the secret of the change. He told me a strange story. Tired and spent in strength, one day, he had stretched himself at full length under the shade of a tree in a quiet place far from the madding crowds of men. Soon he fell asleep. He passed into the dream-land. It was a strange dream he dreamt! He could understand the language of the birds! He heard them survey the situation of Humanity and say: “What is man’s melody?”

He has not yet learnt to rely on himself. If man but developed self-reliance, he would know he was not weak, but that hid within him were rich powers of achievement. Son of man! Return to thyself. “I woke from sleep,” my friend said to me, “I woke with a new centre of consciousness. I woke with faith in myself. I woke with realisation of the wisdom of self- reliance: Son of man! Return to thyself!”
