Why God Loves Small Gifts – Sadhu Vaswani

Lord, what shall I offer thee

Anything, any quest, which is devoid of love and emotion is sand, it is a desert, dry and wanting. True knowledge, a true quest has to come from deep within.

A verse in the Gita which moves me from within is:

Leaves, flowers, fruits, I offer to you, my Lord!

Krishna is the God of small things. He loves small gifts. For him small is beautiful, for it epitomizes humility. God does not need the universe; for he himself has created the universe. He accepts small things as they are the offerings of a loving heart.

A rich businessman donated fifty thousand rupees for charity. Those fifty thousand rupees are trash if he does not carry love for Krishna; and if he does not bear witness to his teachings. God does not ask us large sums of money. He yearns for true love of our hearts.

A scholar may have read many books. He may be a modern wizard, but God does not care for scholarship or for the knowledge. For knowledge without humility is dust. A scholar who has probed into the world of knowledge, but has not cultivated compassion in his heart, is not accepted by the Lord. For books are nothing but dry leaves of knowledge.

For years I searched for a book titled Cosmos. Cosmos contained the description of the infinite universe. The book has been written by a great scholar. He began to write this book at the age of 76 years and wrote it till he died at the age of 90 years. For 14 years this scholar laboured on the book. Although this book contains scientific information about the universe and its mystery, it is limited. Now with the advancement of science, it is outdated. What remains, and will continue to remain is the emotion in a man expressed as bhakti, expressed as devotion to the infinite.

Anything, any quest, which is devoid of love and emotion is sand, it is a desert, dry and wanting. True knowledge, a true quest has to come from deep within. It is loaded with love.
