International Cat Day: Top benefits of adopting a cat

It was a revelation for me to learn that cats are one of the most intelligent animals and can prove to be great pets.

When my tween daughter asked for a pet, I could understand her yearning for it. However, her persistence to adopt a cat left me a little baffled. I had grown up with two pet dogs in my childhood so it never came to me that a cat could be an addition to our family.

Upon asking my daughter why she wanted a cat as a pet, her confident response was that cats are loving and peaceful companions. At sea, I sat down to browse through the internet to enhance my knowledge about adopting a feline pet.

While browsing, I came across International Cat Day that is celebrated on August 8th. In 2002, the International Fund for Animal Welfare created this day to raise awareness for cats. I was very intrigued to know that cats spend between 30 to 50% of their time in a day just grooming themselves. They remain self-occupied, don’t demand pamepering and always remain loyal.

Never before this had I realised the importance of cats as pets and the immense pleasure and company they give. Here I list the benefits of having a cat in your home and life.

Stress-busters

Cats are adorable furry felines who bring unconditional love to their humans. They are playful, tiny bundles of fur who fill up the space with love, warmth and calm. They could be sitting in your lap, calming frayed nerves or simply sitting in a corner, making you relax from afar. Scientific research reveals that a cat’s purr can be calming for  one’s nervous system. It can also lower one’s blood pressure.

A cat purrs in response to happiness, but also as a coping mechanism to stress, as a call for hunger or when another cat is around.

Low maintenance pets

If you are a small apartment dweller and are longing for a pet, a cat can be your trustworthy choice. They do not require expansive spaces or lawns to play, unlike other pets like dogs.

Cats can adjust very well to narrow spaces. In fact, one can find them resting or playing all by themselves without upsetting any part of the house.

Not attention seekers

If you are a dog lover or know people who pet dogs, then you might know how dogs express their joy by barking. In a stark contrast, cats are quiet. They only tend to make a noise when hungry.

Cats are too independent to bother you for most part of the day. And yet when you return home after a gruelling day, a cat will come to welcome you, but in its own loving but individualistic manner.

Caress its furry back, put it on your lap for a bit and feel that stress leave your body. Even if cats don’t profess their love and loyalty in a joyous or excited manner, you can be assured of their honest companionship.

Long life span

If you have ever had a pet, then you know how heartbreaking it is when they leave you for their heavenly abode. That excruciating pain aside, a cat usually has a longer life span than other domestic animals – they can sometimes live up to 18-20 years of age. So adopting a cat means a longer companionship and more memories.

Make your space pest-free

A cat is interesting in many ways. When a cat is around, one can be assured that their premises will remain free of insects, rodents and other small bugs. Cats, being omnivores, feast on these small creatures and sometimes do it just to appease their hunting instincts. But that rids your home of pests and the hygiene issues they bring along. Isn’t that something?

Keep you active

Not just calming fur buddies, cats with their antics can keep you and your kids entertained too. As one of the most intelligent animals, cats are great playmates to kids, and know how to play hide and seek, blow bubbles or hunt for treasure. You will be amazed to see your pet chasing and cracking challenges with their sharp intelligence.

Scientists, who have done studies on cat behaviour state that cats are very smart and intelligent. According to research, cats have the ability to acquire new behaviour as well as adapt to new situations.

Now, I can finally comprehend why my daughter is so fond of cats and she has succeeded in making me understand how a cat can be a great pet. Guess we’ll be off to an adoption shelter over the weekend to get a feline buddy home!
