Cultivating a grateful heart

Cultivating a grateful heart

“Even when we are overwhelmed by problems, let us focus our minds on positive things and thank God for all the wonderful things of life.” – Dada JP Vaswani

A special service programme was being organised at the ashram of a holy man. The parents of a brave young soldier, who had been killed in action, had donated a generous amount for a memorial seva to be conducted to honour his sacrifice. Parents of his colleagues were also attending the prayer meeting that preceded the seva.

When the announcement of the service programme was made, one of the mothers whispered to her husband, “Let us do the same for our boy!”

“What are you saying?” demanded the husband.

“Our son is still alive! He didn’t lose his life!”

“That’s just the point,” said the mother, with tears in her eyes. “Let us give what we can, in gratitude to the lord, for sparing his life!”

The poet George Herbert prayed: “Our Father, Thou hast given us so much. Give us one more thing—a grateful heart!”

It is so easy to add up our troubles—but it takes some effort to focus on things which we ought to be grateful for. So, even when we are overwhelmed by problems, let us focus our minds on positive things and thank God for all the wonderful things of life—family and friends, sunshine, stars and sky. Let us thank Him too, for sufferings and disappointments—for they make us evolve spiritually.

In every condition, every circumstance of life, let these words come out of the very depths of our hearts, “Thank you God! Thank you God!” We will find that we are filled with a peace that will amaze us. When we thank the Lord all the time, we build for ourselves a ladder of consciousness on which we can climb and touch the very pinnacle of peace.
