Power to accommodate

Power to accommodate

"The ability to accommodate the differences will go a long way in bringing peace in our hearts, our homes and the world that so many of us wish for," states Swathi Prasad.

The word accommodation immediately brings up visuals of “vacancy”, “for rent” or “to let” signs. However, we are not going to discuss housing accommodation on this platform. We are going to dive within to emerge this quality or ability to accommodate people regardless of their differences.

Why is this so important, we may ask.

One of the root causes of disturbance across the world is difference, be it culture, language, beliefs, colour or religion. The ability to accommodate the differences will go a long way in bringing peace in our hearts, our homes and the world that so many of us wish for.

Let’s look at this ability in more detail.

A good analogy to understand this is that of river and ocean. When the rivers flow into the ocean, there are no differences left between the river water and ocean water, the vast ocean has accommodated the river. But there are two stepping stones to reach this magnanimity of heart.

Firstly, we need to be able to tolerate the differences. An analogy for tolerance would be that of a tree laden with fruits. If we throw a stone at the tree, it will give us the fruit but there is a possibility that the stone may leave a scar behind. Practice of tolerance will lead us to acceptance which is the next stepping stone.

Once we have established a constant link with God, his energy will flow into us and see us through any situation.

During our lifespan, we learn to accept people and situations but more often than not, feelings of resentment or hurt could linger on. However, with a lot of respect and patience for others, once we have developed the ability to accommodate, we are free from our inner bondages and move beyond judging, criticising and expecting, and hence no scars or hurt is left behind.

As we practise this, one motivational thought we can hold on to is that, regardless of my flaws and shortcomings, God has accommodated me so I extend this benevolence to those around me to accommodate everyone.

Once we have established a constant link with God, his energy will flow into us and see us through any situation. And to stay connected with God, we need to spend some time in meditation, be it 15 minutes or half hour or more, every day.

Just as to establish a phone connection we pick up the phone and dial the number and a connection is established if the line is clear; to establish a connection with God, we set aside all our chores, clear our mind of mundane thoughts and focus our mind and intellect on the one Supreme energy and start a conversation with Him.

Our best wishes for a successful accommodation.
