Laugh it off

Laugh it off

"Laughter, especially the ability to laugh at oneself, is the greatest gift we can have." - Dada JP Vaswani

“Which is the most important of the five senses?” I was asked.

“None of them,” I replied, “but the sixth sense, the sense of humour.”

I am convinced that many of our problems can be solved, if only we relearn the gift of laughter. The tragedy of modern man is that he does not laugh enough. Laughter, I always say, is a powerful tonic—it vitalises the body, mind, and spirit. It is an excellent dry-cleaner—it cleanses you from inside.

The holistic benefits of laughter have been well researched and well documented. Laughter relaxes the muscles, expands the blood vessels, improves circulation and reduces the level of stress-causing hormones. Above all, laughter exercises your facial muscles, improving your ‘face value’!

Laughter, especially the ability to laugh at oneself, is the greatest gift we can have. For humour tempers our faith, even as carbon tempers iron, to produce a tougher, more resistant substance.

It was Victor Hugo who said, “Laughter is the sun that drives the winter from the human face.” When you feel sad, depressed, tense, just look at your face in a mirror. It seems so serious, so constricted, and so tight that you will not want others to see it! The stress and strain reflected on your face is obviously due to negative emotions that are playing havoc inside you.

Laughter, especially the ability to laugh at oneself, is the greatest gift we can have. For humour tempers our faith, even as carbon tempers iron, to produce a tougher, more resistant substance.

I am told that laughter has indeed become a ‘serious’ business these days! Laughter Workshops and Laughter Leader Training programmes are being held all over the world. People are also being taught “the underlying philosophy” and the “skills” of different kinds of laughter.

My advice to you is, “With or without the theory, learn to laugh! Laugh at yourself. Laugh with others. Laugh your way to health and harmony.”
