Work is Worship

Spiritual value of work

Sadhu Vaswani believed that true work should express love – love for the world around us, the people, birds, animals, and all aspects of creation. For out of such love is true service born.

Gurudev Sadhu Vaswani always emphasised the spiritual value of work. For, he believed that the soul stagnates in idleness, even as fresh water grows foul without motion. But he also believed that true work should express love – love for the world around us, the people, birds, animals, and all aspects of creation. For out of such love is true service born. We spoke of work as worship. Talking of Karma-yoga, Gurudev Sadhu Vaswani teaches us to worship God through work. He also points out the stages in this worship:

Work as duty. Do your work as a disciplined soldier? Do it as your duty. Think not of the fruits of action.

Work as Lokasangraha (welfare of the world) Look around you! The world is in suffering: the world needs helpers. Serve and be ready to suffer in service of suffering humanity.

Work as yagna – an offering to God. Dedicate your life to God. If your life is not a dedication to the Divine Life, it becomes disintegration. The life dedicated to the divine is indeed, a happy life. It is a life of true service – and through it we grow in reverence for the poor, realising that the Lord is the wandering brother of the poor!

Thus does work become a prayer. For to work is to pray.
