silence or meditation

Fear not silence

"When we sit in silence, we can connect ourselves with the source of the universe," writes Dada JP Vaswani.

Why are we afraid of solitude and silence? Possibly because we cannot bear to look deep within ourselves. This is why many people say they don’t have time for silence or meditation. But they will realise when they go deep within themselves, that the infinite is within—and we have nothing to fear.

When a man sits in silence, he creates a space within himself. In that space, he can establish his relationship with God. He can do this by creating beauty in that space—the beauty and glow of love. For most of our waking time, we are preoccupied with worldly matters; we are isolated from God. We are alienated from our true home. We exist in a spiritual vacuum.

When we sit in silence, we can connect ourselves with the source of all the universe. If you find this is not happening, you may chant in silence, within your heart, your favourite verses from holy scriptures or simply chant silently, the name divine.

At first, the practice may appear to be meaningless, a sheer waste of time. But if you persist in it, silence will become alive and the word of God will speak to you.

If you find this also not very congenial, then the easiest thing to do is to sit in silence and write the word, OM. The point I am making is, that you must withdraw the mind from external worldly temptations and bring it to focus on the inner eye. Then you will find the veil of maya is thrust aside, and you glimpse the Truth.

We have looked for ourselves out here, but we will not be able to find ourselves until we look within, until we turn inside where it is dark. Let us practice silence every day, preferably at the same time and the same place—for this is our daily appointment with our own selves, our true self, the real self, the self-supreme that, for want of a better word, we call God. Begin with fifteen minutes, then gradually increase the period to at least one hour. At first, the practice may appear to be meaningless, a sheer waste of time. But if you persist in it, silence will become alive and the word of God will speak to you. And you will realise that practising silence is, perhaps, the most worthwhile activity of the day.
